It’s so simple. All you have to do is …

“Losing weight is simple. All you have to do is eat veggies and lean protein for most of your meals”

Sure, that’s true … If you wre an emotionless robot who had a mostly effortless life, with low demands on your time and emotional and mental energy.

Any blanket statements around health and weight loss entirely ignore the human experience and place an impossible burden of expectation on the individual.

On top of that, when someone fails to adhere to said guidelines, they’re often told that they just don’t want it bad enough.

Are you freaking kidding me?

Whenever someone makes such a blanket statement, I would like to sarcastically slow clap, and hand them a fake trillion-dollar cheque for solving all the world’s problems.

It demonstrates a staggering level of ignorance about what it truly means to be human.

For some people, their bodies seem to respond surprisingly well to being put into a box of strict rules. And the problem with that is, they then feel that “because it worked for me, it should work for you, right?”

The truth is, for most people who would like to lose weight, it feels like a never-ending struggle, filled with frustration, despair, and ultimately, just wanting to give up.

They buy quick fixes like lottery tickets, knowing in their heart that it probably won’t be a winner, yet feel like there’s no other option because everything else has failed.

So, what’s a person to do? Should we give up on this idea of weight loss altogether?

Nope, not at all. But, what we should throw right out the window is this idea that happiness lies with a certain physique or a number on the scale.

And, in fact, unless you’re willing to address your relationship with food, and your relationship with the person you see in the mirror, every weight loss intervention you try, is going to fail.

You cannot achieve success through self-hatred, envy, anger or jealousy. Not lasting success, anyway.

You know, I appreciate it when a client comes to me and says “I’m down 40lbs” … that’s pretty cool.

But, what really makes me ecstatic is when I see them enjoying life again. When I see them truly SMILING in photos, in the most natural way.

Not waiting until they see a number on the scale or a certain image in the mirror before they start living their life.

Reaching a level of self-love and acceptance that sets them free from the burdens that media and social media place on people to try and achieve impossible perfection.

I don’t think I could put it better than one of my clients, Katelyn, when she said:

“Primarily I like how your brand is actually about lifestyle change. Rather than a strict prescription of: “do this, this and this” …

It’s a wider exploration of habits and allows a person (if they do the work) to explore their own perceptions, assumptions, excuses, and obstacles.

You provide universal tools (in that everyone can use them) but nurture your program followers in a way that we start to see how we can use those tools and what that looks like for us.”
